Defining Culture in Popular Culture

A Museums Connect Project

A multidisciplinary project inspired by the legacy of Pearl S. Buck that explores cultural stereotypes in the media and popular culture. Eight high school students from Montgomery County, Pennsylvania and ten high school students from Zhenjiang, Jiangsu, China collaborated on an online and onsite museum exhibition, provided content for a project blog, conducted community interviews, and chose, coordinated and implemented two community service projects.

The goal of the projects were to inspire students to recognize how popular culture influences their perceptions of other cultures and to instill in them the leadership and confidence necessary to become activists for change. Upon completion of the project, the students have a deeper understanding and knowledege of a different culture, the skills to creatively express their views and educate others, and global experience to collaborate with people from all other cultures on future humanitarian projects.
